Our finance director Matt Cox took on the Yorkshire Post’s regular ‘On The Spot’ Q&A to tell us a little bit more about his career to date, his family life away from Force24 and what exactly he’d do if he won big on the National Lottery. Here’s what he had to say…
What was your first job?
I was a paperboy at the tender age of 13 but my first ‘proper’ job was as a commercial analyst and trainee management accountant for Dixons (now Currys).
If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?
I always wanted to work in business and finance, ever since I studied accountancy at university. I did, however, spend some time working in a pub and enjoyed that, so I’d perhaps run a bar or restaurant.
What was your worst mistake?
This is a good question because I’ve made many! However, I try not to dwell on mistakes and rather take them as things to learn from because each one has made me the person I am today.
What is your ideal day away from the office?
I’d go for a nice day out with my wife and young children – either at the beach, zoo, or theme park – or a nice lunch and a few cocktails with my wife. Alternatively, I’d pick a day in the sun with friends at a music festival (and enjoying a few beers).
Name one person you would most like to have dinner with, and why?
From a business perspective – Jeff Bezos (Amazon CEO). I think his customer-first outlook while being so commercially successful would be great to hear about. On a personal note, it’d be my best friend Joe, as I don’t get to see him as much as I should these days!
What was your best subject at school?
Mathematics. It has to be, doesn’t it?
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy playing and watching football, as well as socialising with friends, watching films and box sets, and spending time with my family.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
At the top of the list would be travelling around the world. Other than that, I’d probably be considered a bit ‘boring’ because I’d love to pay off my mortgage, help family, and donate to charity.
What’s your favourite item of clothing?
Either my wedding suit or a t-shirt that my children got me with their handprints on.
What is your favourite time of day?
Anytime my children aren’t having a ‘tantrum’! Seriously though, it’s when I get to spend time with them once I’ve finished work, and before they go to bed.
What would you like your epitaph to be?
A loving husband and father to girls who were his world. He never worried about the small stuff, loved his dad jokes and always, somehow, managed to put his foot in it!
